How our moving cost calculator works
Our moving cost calculator builds your price the same way an experienced removalist would, one piece at a time:
- Your belongings. Add your furniture room by room. The calculator adds up the total volume in cubic metres and matches it to the right truck.
- Your addresses. The real driving time between your two homes is added to the estimate.
- Access at each end. Stairs, lifts and long walks to the truck all add time, so you choose the access at both ends.
- The total. Time is billed at $180 or $195 an hour depending on the size of the move, with a 2-hour minimum and 15-minute increments after that, plus the call-out fee.
Why this moving cost calculator is so precise
Most online removalist calculators ask how many bedrooms you have and guess the rest. Ours has a cubic metre calculator built in. You add your actual furniture, room by room, from 128 common household items, and it calculates the total cubic metres you're moving.
That volume, not a guess based on bedrooms, is what sets your loading and unloading time, the truck size and your price. It means two 3-bedroom homes with very different amounts of furniture each get their own, fair price, and we arrive with the right truck for exactly how much you're moving.
Your total volume in cubic metres comes with your quote, so you can see precisely what the price is based on. Want to calculate cubic metres on their own first? Use our standalone cubic metre calculator.
What affects your removalist cost
- How much you're moving. More furniture means more loading and unloading time. It's the biggest part of any removalist bill.
- Stairs and lifts. A third-floor walk-up or a slow shared lift can add real time at either end.
- Distance. Driving time between the homes, plus a call-out fee from $100, which we confirm with you.
- Preparation. Packed, labelled boxes and cleared hallways make the crew faster, which makes your move cheaper.
- Bulky or awkward items. Pianos, pool tables and very large wardrobes can need extra time or equipment.
How to reduce your moving cost
- Declutter before moving day, so you're not paying to move things you'll throw out.
- Have everything packed and sealed before the crew arrives.
- Book lifts and loading docks in advance, and reserve parking close to the door.
- Take apart simple furniture yourself if you're comfortable doing it.
- Choose a mid-month weekday if your dates are flexible.
Our moving checklist covers all of this week by week.
